Reid

Rob Reid's latest book is titled "What's Black and White and Reid All Over: Something Hilarious Happened at the Library," (ALA Editions, 2012). The book is a companion book to "Something Funny Happened at the Library" (ALA Editions, 2003) and takes a look at the various types of humor found in children's literature. The title refers to Reid's personal use of humor through his 30 years as a children's storyteller and educator to make literature come alive for children. It is Reid's 10th book with ALA Editions and 14th book overall.

"Regular Discharge" by Jill Olm

An exhibit titled "Leave Me Tender," featuring the artwork of Daniel Atyim and Jill Olm, will be on display from Jan. 15-Feb. 17 at the L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library in Eau Claire. A reception will be held from 7-8:30 p.m.
Jan. 19 in the gallery on the library's second floor mezzanine. The paintings and drawings in the exhibit are works that "entertain abstraction while flirting with representation," in the words of the artists. The exhibit may be viewed during regular library hours.

Davidson

Dr. J. Kenneth Davidson Sr. (emeritus) reports that Alpha Kappa Delta, the international honor society in sociology, has established the J. Kenneth Davidson Sr. Distinguished Lifetime Service Award. This award is "intended to recognize those Alpha Kappa Delta members who have made exemplary contributions through direct service to the organization throughout their professional careers." Davidson also has been named the first recipient of the award in recognition of his myriad service contributions at the national level during his 40 years as an active member in the organization. His many contributions include having served as vice president, president-elect, president, past president and chair of numerous national standing committees and, in particular, the Finance Committee. In addition, he played major roles in the shift of the organization's journal, Sociological Inquiry, from a university publisher to a major publisher of professional journals and books in the field of sociology, as well as the establishment of a national office for Alpha Kappa Delta with an executive director. The award was presented to Davidson at the 2011 Annual Meeting of the Mid-South Sociological Association in October in Little Rock, Ark.

Dr. Sanjukta Chaudhuri recently had an article titled "Does gender discrimination contribute to India's population imbalance? A household level analysis" published in the International Journal of Economic Policy in Emerging Economies, Vol. 4 No. 4, October 2011. The paper studies the determinants of the female infant mortality disadvantage in India. It demonstrates that women's educational attainment, labor force participation and media exposure are associated with significant decreases in the gender gap in infant mortality.

Dr. Karen Mumford and co-authors recently had their article, titled "Changes in Physical Activity and Travel Behaviors in Residents of a Mixed Use Development," published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, Vol. 41, No. 5, 2011. The paper examines the travel and physical activity behaviors of individuals before and after moving to Atlantic Station, a mixed-use development in metropolitan Atlanta, Ga. The paper found that adults who moved to Atlantic Station increased their levels of recreational and transportation-related walking, decreased travel by automobile and increased their use of public transportation.

Dr. Josh Brown recently co-authored a paper titled "Functional Convergence and Extension in Contact: Syntactic and Semantic Attributes of the Progressive Aspect in Pennsylvania Dutch," which was presented at the Second Workshop on Immigrant Languages in America, an international forum devoted to linguistic research among minority languages in the United States, held Sept. 21-24 in Norway. The paper dealt with structural outcomes in language contact situations. Brown and co-author Dr. Michael Putnam (Penn State) provided data from Amish varieties of Pennsylvania Dutch in both Pennsylvania and the Midwest to show how language systems develop and change over time to meet the communicative needs of bilingual speakers.

Matt Stein, a lecturer in environmental public health, and UW-Eau Claire senior Caitlin Rosch have been awarded a trip to Washington, D.C., Oct. 25-27 to attend a workshop on radon-resistant new construction. Sponsored by the National Environmental Health Association, this workshop will include state and local officials and private practitioners. Stein and Rosch will represent UW-Eau Claire's ENPH program. Radon gas is the second-leading cause of preventable lung cancer. This workshop will provide participants with new construction engineering and inspection tools to limit radon exposure to the public. Following the workshop, Stein plans to integrate radon training into the ENPH curriculum, and Rosch will give a presentation to the UW-Eau Claire Student National Environmental Health Association. The following UW-Eau Claire faculty and staff members recently received grant funding:

Dr. Don Mowry, Center for Service-Learning, and Dr. Donna Lehmkuhl, ECLIPSE program, received an award for $93,679 from the Wisconsin National and Community Service Board AmeriCorps State program for the project titled "Early Childhood Literacy Intervention Program, Services, and Evaluation project (ECLIPSE)." This continues the ECLIPSE program, formerly known as Jumpstart, which helps build literacy skills in preschool children.
Dr. Bruce Ouderkirk and Alice Bayerl, Student Support Services, received continuing grants totalling $591,691 from the U.S. Department of Education's Student Support Services-Regular and SSS-Disabled programs. This continues SSS programming, which provides access to a wide range of academic assistance for UW-Eau Claire student participants.
Dr. Patricia Quinn, McNair Program, received a continuing grant for $224,273 from the U.S. Department of Education's Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement program, which helps eligible first-generation students from low-income families prepare for and enter graduate programs leading to the Ph.D.
Dr. Joan Sosalla, Educational Opportunity Center, received a $328,585 grant from the U.S. Department of Education to continue the current Educational Opportunity Centers program, which provides free counseling and assistance on college admissions and financial options to qualified adults.
Jodi Thesing-Ritter, Dean of Students office, received a $46,000 grant from the Great Lakes Higher Education Guaranty Corp. to continue the elementary school portion of Blugold Beginnings, which provides a comprehensive college connection through campus visits and mentoring. This is Thesing-Ritter's third such award from Great Lakes.
Kimamo Wahome, Upward Bound, received a continuing grant for $318,069 from the U.S. Department of Education for the Upward Bound Program, which supports 9th through 11th-grade students committed to the goal of a post-secondary education.
Rebecca Wurzer, Children’s Center, received a continuing grant for $52,738 from the U.S. Department of Education for the Childcare Access Means Parents in School program, which provides infant and toddler care for the children of Pell-eligible students.

Dr. Jim Phillips

Dr. Jim Phillips, with current and former research students Robin Knauf, Heather Helminiak and John Wrass, recently had their manuscript titled "Structural and energetic properties of alkylfluoride — BF3 complexes in the gas phase and condensed-phase media: Computations and matrix infrared spectroscopy" accepted for publication in the Journal of Physical Organic Chemistry. Principal author Knauf, now in the chemistry doctoral program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, wrote the first draft of the paper to fulfill the requirements for departmental honors and made final revisions last summer before submitting the paper in July. She was one of two students in the first cohort to complete the recently revised honors requirements, which require a manuscript to be reviewed by three faculty members. Helminiak is in her final year at UW-Eau Claire, pursuing a chemistry-education degree, and Wrass, a 2010 graduate, is employed locally as a bench chemist.

A nationwide research team, which includes Dr. Jennifer Johs-Artisensi and Dr. Doug Olson of the health care administration faculty, has received a $9,600 grant from the National Association of Long Term Care Administrator Boards to study academic and professional standards for nursing home administrators. The study will explore links between education and training practices, especially those related to the practicum or administrator-in-training field requirement, with the scores on the NAB certification examination. A second phase of the project will incorporate information from all 50 states in the research data set. According to Johs-Artisensi, current state licensure requirements are varied and little is currently known about which education and training practices best prepare an individual for a career in health care administration. Results of the study can be used by the profession to develop higher quality education and training programs, and suggest national licensure standards. The research team plans to report its results at the June 2012 NAB annual meeting.

The following UW-Eau Claire faculty and staff presented professional development sessions: Dr. Don Mowry, director of the Center for Service-Learning, presented "The Triumvirate of Service-Learning and Its Impact in the United States and Worldwide"; Dr. Karl Markgraf, director of the Center for International Education, presented "International Education at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire"; Dr. Marvin Lynn, associate dean for teacher education in the College of Education and Human Sciences, and Dr. Jill Pinkney Pastrana, associate professor and chair in the department of education studies, presented "Exploring the Impact of Race, Social Class and Language on Education in the United States and Chile"; Dr. Ann Hlas, associate professor of Spanish and foreign language education, presented "High-leverage Teaching Practices in Foreign Language Education"; Dr. Aram deKoven, assistant professor of education studies, and Dr. Deborah Patee, assistant professor of education studies, presented "The Power of the Subconscious Mind: How Educators Can Inadvertently Negatively Alter Outcomes for Students"; and Dr. Gail Scukanec, dean of the College of Education and Human Sciences, presented "Higher Education in the United States."

Kansai Gaidai faculty also had opportunities to spend time with UW-Eau Claire faculty mentors who have similar research and teaching interests. Dr. Kate Mastruserio Reynolds worked as an English language specialist for the U.S. State Department during the month of August. She prepared English as a foreign language teachers and academic coordinators of the Centro Colombo America Pereira and Manizales in task-based language teaching by conducting daily workshops; consulting; analyzing curricula, texts and support materials; mentoring staff and coordinators; and advising on teacher evaluation practices and program development. Mastruserio Reynolds also presented a plenary session titled "10 Quick Tips to Gauge Learners' Comprehension" and workshops titled "Make it Your Own: User-Friendly Rubrics for the Language Classroom" and "Analyzing your Textbooks to Improve Instruction and for Publication" at the 19th Annual Peru Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages Conference July 31-Aug. 2 in Lima, Peru. In July Mastruserio Reynolds' book review of "Tips for Teaching Culture: Practical Approaches to Intercultural Communication" was published by TEFL.net.

• Jackie Kriesel has been appointed to the position of controller in Business Services. Kriesel began serving in the position July 1. As controller, Kriesel supervises University Accounting and continues to provide accounting expertise, business process support and financial leadership to functional areas within Budget and Finance as well as faculty, staff and students. Kriesel will have an expanded role in the preparation of auxiliary budgets, rate setting and fee structures.

• Mark Reeves continues in his role as director of Business Services, directly supervising purchasing as well as overseeing accounts payable (with Vickie Gardner continuing to serve as accounts payable manager). Reeves will devote an increased share of his time to planning, coordinating and preparing the university’s general operating budget. He also will have an expanded role in segregated fee budgeting and planning.

• Kim O’Kelly was appointed as interim bursar beginning April 1. O'Kelly supervises the Business Office and also continues to serve as Parking and Transportation manager.

Dr. Scott Whitfield and co-workers recently had their article, titled "Ba 5s Photoionization in the Region of the Second Cooper Minimum," published in the Journal of Physics B: Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics, Vol. 44, Aug. 28, 2011, article 165002. The paper examines the behavior of s-subshell electrons ionized from Ba atoms with soft x-rays. Their behavior, in a region where the probability for creating them is very low, is determined experimentally and compared to sophisticated theoretical calculations. Generally good accord between experiment and theory is found.

Last fall Dr. Martina Lindseth was invited to apprentice to become an oral proficiency interview tester trainer for the American Council on the Teaching of
Foreign Languages — the only candidate chosen for German. In May she finished the last phase of the apprentice program and has been selected by ACTFL to be an OPI trainer. Lindseth now is certified to conduct OPI assessment and related workshops in the U.S. and abroad under the auspices of the ACTFL Professional Programs department. Her professional development opportunity was funded through UW-Eau Claire's Office of Research and Sponsored Programs' Workshops and Special Projects Travel Program funds and ACTFL.

Julie Eklund will lead a discussion series titled "You've Been Warned: A Discussion of Classic and Contemporary Dystopian Novels" Sept. 20 and 27, and Oct. 4 and 11 at the L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library in Eau Claire. The sessions will be held from 7-8:30 p.m. in the Chippewa Room on the library's lower level. Dystopian novels critique the social and political practices of their time and offer an imagined glimpse into dismal futures that may unfold under dire circumstances. The four sessions will explore both older novels that predicted what life might be like today and newer novels that consider potentially perilous roads ahead. The series is co-sponsored by the library, the UW-Eau Claire English department and the Elizabeth G. Morris Scholarship Fund of the UW-Eau Claire Foundation. Michael Axelrod and Mary Beth Tusing, both faculty members in the psychology department and the Human Development Center, received a grant from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction for the 2011-12 academic year. The grant, titled "Interdisciplinary Training for Preservice Educators: Building Purposeful Response to Intervention Field Experiences into the Curriculum," will allow Axelrod and Tusing to provide interdisciplinary training experiences to graduate students in the school psychology program and undergraduate students majoring in elementary and special education. Students will be provided with supervised experiences in academic assessment and intervention through the Human Development Center's Academic Intervention Clinic, a program that provides reading and math intervention services to elementary school students in Eau Claire.

Nikki Andrews, Continuing Education, received an award for $12,900 from the Otto Bremer Foundation to continue the project "Nonprofit Leadership Certificate Series." The award provides funding for nonprofit professionals to learn about management, strategic planning and fundraising.
Dr. Bart Dahl, chemistry, received an award for $50,000 from the American Chemical Society's Petroleum Research Fund for the project "The Design, Synthesis, and Characterization of 'Smart' Donor-Acceptor Biaryls." This ACS-PRF award is specifically for new faculty at predominantly undergraduate institutions. Undergraduates will be involved in the research.
Dr. Gary Don, music and theatre arts, received an award from UW-System's curricular redesign program for the project "Technology and Collaborative Learning for Time on Task Music Skills: A Blend of the Aural and Analytical." This project is a collaboration with a colleague at UW-Madison.
Dr. Debbie Gough, Advising and New Student Initiatives, received a grant for $47,350 from the UW System's Supporting the Growth Agenda program. The overall goal is to increase multicultural transfers and improve the retention and graduation rates of all Chippewa Valley Technical College transfers to UW-Eau Claire.
Dr. Deb Jansen, nursing received an award for $38,337 from the Health Resources and Services Administration program "Advanced Education Nursing Traineeship." This program will provide traineeships that will pay all or part of the costs of tuition, books, fees and reasonable living expenses for master's and doctor of nursing practice students.
Dr. David Lewis, chemistry, received an award for $6,259 from the WiSys Product Development Fund program, which supports the development of prototypes or preparation of samples related to inventions.
Pat Montanye, financial aid, received an award for $10,686 from the Health Resources and Services Administration program "Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students." UW-Eau Claire has received this award for many years, and the funds support nursing students.
Dr. Christine Morales, chemistry, received an award for $35,000 from the Research Corp. Single Investigator Cottrell College Science Awards program for the project titled "Predicting Spectra of Transition Metal Hydrides: Ligand-Dependent Effects on M—H Bonding." Morales will involve two undergraduate students in the research.
Dr. Jim Phillips, chemistry, received an award for $3,500 from the UW System and WiSys Reassignment Time/Assistance for Extramural Grant Applications program. He will spend the summer writing a grant for submission to the National Science Foundation.
Dr. Crispin Pierce, environmental public health, received a fellowship from the Fulbright Scholar program. He will teach and conduct research at the University of Eastern Finland in spring 2012. Pierce plans to study the exposure of Finnish children to heavy metals and impacts on health and will work to re-establish Scandinavian connections for future internships and shared research. Lee Anna Rasar, music and theatre arts, received an award for $5,000 from the UW System Institute on Race and Ethnicity curriculum development program. The goal of the project is to develop the curriculum for a new course on the history of the guitar and four targeted ethnic groups: African American, Hispanic, American Indian, and Asian American.
Dr. Sherrie Serros, mathematics, received an award for $17,946 from the UW System program PK-16: Teacher Quality Initiative for the project titled "Assessment of Pedagogical Content Knowledge Aligned with Common Core Standards for Pre-Student Teachers." This project is a collaboration with UW-River Falls.
Dr. Todd Wellnitz, biology, received an award for $136,407 from the National Science Foundation for the project titled "CAREER: Linking Heterogeneity to the Contributions Made by Species to Ecosystem Processes." This is the fifth and final year of the project, which supports the role of teacher-scholar through the integration of education and research.
Drs. Todd Wellnitz and Eric Merten, biology, received an award for $3,000 from the USDA Forest Service. They will continue work on the Logjam project to install and monitor large wood habitat debris jams on streams within the Superior National Forest. Undergraduates are involved in the project.
Dr. Kurt Wiegel, chemistry, received an award for $170,000 from the National Science Foundation for the project titled "RUI: Supramolecular main-chain liquid crystalline networks as a probe of mesogen formation and stability." This is Wiegel's second NSF award; he will involve four undergraduate students in the research.
